HOSA state and national competition
In the spring semester, JHU HOSA students judge high school students as they compete at the HOSA state competition. The categories vary from job seeking skills and informative poster to CPR and EMT. This allows the JHU students to learn about expectations in health careers and also to convey these expectations to the high school students. JHU HOSA members also participate at the HOSA national competition, which introduces them to students and opportunities across the country.
A scholarship from the National branch of HOSA is available. You can download it here. (Link to be posted soon)
HOSA is very dedicated to its mission. Since the creation of HOSA, its members have been involved in a variety activities all targeted towards raising awareness about medical issues and general health concerns. Below, are some past events we have been apart of.
Past/Ongoing Events
The Children’s House at Johns Hopkins – The Children’s House provides need-based housing and a relaxing atmosphere for the families of children undergoing heavy treatment at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Many of these families are out-of-state residents and several even come from other countries. JHU HOSA members visit the Children’s House weekly to enhance the atmosphere by providing the children with fun arts and crafts activities. It’s a great way for the children to interact with each other and to forget about their conditions while letting the parents relax. In addition, during the second semester, we are planning to expand these types of activities to surrounding hospitals such as Union Memorial and JHH.
Nursing Homes – Similarly, HOSA members provide relaxing group activities and friendship to the elderly at nursing homes. In the past, members have mainly volunteered at the Alice Manor nursing home; with more funding, we are planning to provide similar care at other nursing homes. This year, due to an increase in HOSA membership, we are also planning to volunteer at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, soup kitchens, and walks/runs.
Food drive – Last May, HOSA began a food drive themed: “Make a Point to Donate a Point.†Students spent their unused points to buy and donate food items to the Children’s House. The food drive was a huge success. We are planning to hold a similar food drive this year (at the end of the semester) to benefit homeless shelters in the Baltimore City.

Welcome to the HOSA site. Although this is the first post, meetings, events and other general information will be posted here.
About Us
HOSA is a national organization that strives to promote career opportunities in health care and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people mainly through volunteering at health-related sites. The Johns Hopkins University Campus chapter of HOSA was created to:
1) Provide such group volunteering opportunities in the Baltimore City to interested students.
2) Convey a sense of service and promote an interest in health careers to middle school and high school students in the city.
3) Increase campus awareness of current important health topics through events.
Overall, this HOSA chapter strives to instill a sense of service and leadership among future healthcare professionals and other interested individuals while helping the city move in a positive direction.
Based on the 2005 U.S. Census Bureau, 22.6% of inhabitants in Baltimore City live below the poverty level compared to the national average of 13.3%. Furthermore, Baltimore City has one of the ten lowest median household incomes in the nation. As such, volunteering and nonprofit organizations are most helpful in directly improving the lives of Baltimore City inhabitants.
Goals
HOSA strives to instill a sense of service and leadership among future healthcare professionals on campus and in the Baltimore City by providing JHU students and inner-city students with 1) group volunteering opportunities, and 2) healthcare-related educational opportunities.
Meetings
HOSA has an officer meeting every Monday, with one of these meetings being a general body meeting (where all members will meet). These events are held so HOSA officers can coordinate events with the general body. Event ideas are discussed and planned. Officers and general body members are expected to volunteer a little bit of their free time towards helping out with events that are planned. JHU HOSA members are also expected to attend two general body meetings and two volunteering activities or events per month.
