JHU Caribbean Cultural Society

We will be having a General Body Meeting on Thursday, April 17th at 6:00 PM in Mattin 162. We will be working on some projects for the pageant and accepting nominations for the 2008-2009 Executive Board. The elections will be held on the 24th so make sure to come out if you want to nominate yourself or someone else.

Don’t forget! The Pageant is coming up this Monday the 21st. Cast a vote so your favorite contestant can win Ms. Viewers Choice! Then buy a ticket from her so she can win Ms. Popularity!

Our next general body meeting will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 6:00 PM in Mattin 162 (or one of the other rooms close by).  We’ll be bringing back This Week In The Caribbean so come out and chat with us about current events in the Caribbean.

On the following Saturday, April 12 we’ll be joining Alpha Phi Omega with a community service trip to Keswick Multi-Care Center.  They usually go around 1:45 PM but we’ll be meeting up a little earlier.  Exact location and time TBA.

The Faces of the Caribbean Pageant is back! On Monday, April 21st at 7pm in the Glass Pavilion the Caribbean Cultural Society will bring back our famous pageant!

Applications will be available in the Office of Housing and Dining in Wolman tomorrow!

The goal of the pageant is to expose both the audience and the delegates to the history of the Caribbean region, the diversity of cultures and people existing within it and the music and fashion in an informal and enjoyable environment!

You do NOT have to be from the Caribbean to participate, we invite girls from all over the world to become delegates!

The CCS will be collaborating with the Muslim Association, ASA and BSU for a movie screening of Prince Among Slaves on Thursday, February 28th. Come to the Interfaith Center at 6:30 PM to see this winner of the 2007 American Black Film Festival Best Documentary award. Oh, and it’s narrated by Mos Def!

We will be taking a trip to the Inner Harbor this Sunday, Febraury 24th to see Body Worlds at the Maryland Science Center.  We are going to meet at the Library at 4:15 PM in order to catch the 4:20 PM Collegetown shuttle.  We will grab a quick bite to eat in the Inner Harbor and then see the exhibit which is supposed to be amazing!  It is the most popular museum exhibit in the world!  See the effects of healthy lifestyles choices, discover the power of the brain and learn the intricacies of your body as it lies beneath your skin.

Our second general body meeting of the semester will be this Thursday, February 21st at 6:00 PM.  It will be a game night with Taboo and something from the Caribbean.  We’ll be bringing snacks (hint hint) but feel free to bring more!

On Tuesday, December 4th from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM we will be having our Movable Feast Community Service event. We are collaborating with Housing and Dining to cook and bake a meal for homebound individuals battling HIV/AIDS. This event will take place in the Charles Commons Kitchen.

Bring all your friends and join us for Christmas in the Caribbean! The chefs at Nolan’s will be serving up our own menu of:

- Jerk Chicken Quarters
- Vegetables in Coco bread
- Sour Beef
- Sweet Garlic Pork
- Curried sweet potato mash
- Rice and peas
- Sautéed Squash, Grilled Fennel, Onions, Mango and Grilled Pineapple

The event will take place at Nolan’s in Charles Commons on Friday, December 7th from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM. You can even pay with your dining dollars and there will be live entertainment!

Thursday, November 15 - Caribbean Meet and Greet at 6:00 PM in Mattin 162 with students from Morgan State and Loyola. Refreshments will be served!

Thursday, November 22 - Thanksgiving Break, no meeting.
