1) Call for Research Papers and Research Posters for Regional Conferences
AIChE Regional Conferences will be taking place from April 17th to April 19th at Hampton University in Hampton Virginia. Conferences are a great opportunity to network with industries, meet students from other chapters, as well as partake in research paper and poster competitions. If you are interested in presenting a research paper or poster at this conference, please email jhu.aiche.sbe@gmail.com for more information. Space is limited. AIChE/SBE will cover all travel and hotel expense for all members attending.
2) Exxon Mobil Industry Event
Exxon Mobil will be visiting our campus and will be hosting an industry event for AIChE/SBE on Monday, April 6th at 6:30pm in the Sherwood Room (Levering Hall). As you might have noticed by the email from the career center, Exxon-Mobil is still hiring. If you are interested or would like to learn more about the company, please feel free to RSVP to the event by emailing jhu.aiche.sbe@gmail.com.
3) Spring Picnic
Our annual Spring Picnic will take place behind Maryland Hall on Wednesday, April 8th (Rain day: April 9th) from 11:30am to 1:30pm. We invite all undergraduate and graduate students to join AIChE/SBE, as well as the department faculty and staff, to relax and to grab some food. Event is free for all AIChE/SBE members.

4) National AIChE Membership
I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everybody, once again, to join the national chapter of AIChE. There are many benefits to joining the national chapter, which includes networking opportunities, updates on the Chemical Engineering Industry, web seminars, and certification programs.
The SACHE certification program is a safety certification that looks amazing on resumes. Everybody should consider this training for not only can they include it on their resume, but at the end of the year, the national office will send our department SACHE Certification Certificates for distribution.
Finally, as a program hosted by nationals for graduating seniors, the national office is offering seniors a chance to get free movie tickets, in addition to helping their chapter, by signing up through the Scale-Up program. Please look out for class announcements in your Senior Design class for these cards.
Just a note, when I first personally joined AIChE, there was a substantial cost in order to receive all these benefits. Thanks to the scale-up program, the fee has been waived for all undergraduate students, but it is not guaranteed that this will last forever. Please take advantage of this opportunity and sign up ASAP at http://www.aiche.org/Students/Join/index.aspx.
5) Order of the Engineer
Our department has been given the opportunity to take part in the inauguration of the Order of the Engineer. The Order of the Engineer is a pledge to honor the profession of engineering and uphold engineer ethics—a sort of Hippocratic Oath for engineers.
The Order of the Engineer was adopted from the Canadian tradition: The Ritual of the Calling of the Engineer. The Ritual was initiated in 1922 after the Quebec Bridge collapsed due to poor planning and design by the overseeing engineers, which killed 75 workers. The Ritual served as a reminder that our actions have consequences. The Order of the Engineer is the American version of the Canadian Ritual. Anyone with an ABET accredited engineering degree qualifies to be a member of the Order of the Engineer.
The Inaugural Ceremony will take place on May 20th, 2009 before the Whiting School graduation ceremony. The cost is $10 which covers a certificate, a pocket card to remind members of their oath, and a stainless steel ring to be worn on the small finger of their working hand. If you are interested in taking part in this ceremony, please contact Jamie Kimberley at Jamie.kimberley@jhu.edu.
6) AIChE/SBE Board Elections
We will be hosting a general body meeting in mid-April to conduct elections. A call for nominations will be sent out in early April. Please check our website (www.the.jhu.edu/aiche) to review our constitution and to see requirements for positions. All members are encouraged to run for positions to better serve the professional and social interests of our chapter and our department.
More information will be sent out as the date comes closer.
7) Call for Research Posters for Departmental Poster Session
As part of a tradition that began last year, AIChE/SBE will continue to host a department-wide research poster session that allows students to present undergraduate research. Students are encouraged to take part in displaying their research poster and present to departmental faculty and staff. Posters will be judged during presentations and gift cards will be distributed to the top scorers.
Students may also take the opportunity to discover the variety of research programs and opportunities that take place in our department. If you are interested in presenting a research poster at this event, please email jhu.aiche.sbe@gmail.com.
Clipper City Brewery Tour
AIChE/SBE is extending an invitation to graduating seniors to take part on our annual Clipper City Brewery Tour. More information will be sent out as the end of the semester approaches.
